Singapore slaps 'Love Guru'

Mike Myers comedy gets PG-16 rating

HONG KONG - "The Love Guru" has been hit with a PG-16 rating by Singapore's Board of Film Censors. Pic, which is skedded to be released by UIP on Sept 4, was rapped for its "sexual humor."

The Mike Myers-starring comedy features a guru who uses unconventional methods to reunite an estranged couple. Before reaching its decision the BFC received advice that pic had been the subject of religious sensitivity in the U.S. and referred it to the territory's Films Consultative Panel.

Panel instead focused on the humor. "In their view, the film is a comedy and a work of fiction. It does not denigrate any religion. However, because it contains crude, sexual humor, the BFC has decided to rate the film NC16 with the consumer advice 'Sexual humor," Singapore's Media Development Authority said in a statement Tuesday.

"The film is really an over-the-top comedy about a new age spiritual guru who spouts simplistic oriental pseudo-wisdom," Vijay Chandran, chairman of the FCP told reporters. The FCP's decision was unanimous.
