Program was initiated in 2000, and this year's grants mark an uptick of $25,000.
Students submit short films in competish for awards ranging from $500 to $5,000. Undergrads and grads at the following schools are participating: Brooklyn College, City College, Columbia U., Ghetto Film School, Hunter College, Ithaca College, NYU, School of Visual Arts, SUNY Purchase and Wesleyan U.
Each school receives an amount ranging from $3,000 to $11,500 to award. NBR also presented $3,000 to the Children's Aid Society to purchase film and video equipment.
In addition to the grant money, each student gets a year's membership in the NBR screening group. The first grant winner, Columbia U.'s Joan Stein, snagged a 2000 Oscar nom for her live-action short "One Day Crossing." The number of recipients has increased annually to this year's high of 29.
NBR was founded nearly a century ago to support free expression in cinema.
