Kino gets cozy with 'Momma's Man'

Company nabs rights to family drama

'Momma's Man' will get an Aug. 22 release in Gotham via Kino, followed by a Sept. 5 rollout in Los Angeles.

Kino Intl. has bought domestic rights to writer-director Azazel Jacobs’ quirky family drama “Momma’s Man” out from under cash-strapped ThinkFilm.

Pic, which was praised at this year’s Sundance, will open in Gotham Aug. 22 followed by Los Angeles on Sept. 5. Kino expects to open in all major domestic cities and then expand further.

Story follows Mikey (Matt Boren), a young father and husband who visits his parent’s loft in Gotham and becomes entrenched in his childhood memories and memorabilia to the point where he’s completely unable to return to his own family in L.A. Mikey’s parents are played by Jacobs’ actual parents, avant-garde filmmaker Ken Jacobs (“Star Spangled to Death”) and his wife Flo. Pic was lensed in their Tribeca loft.

“Momma’s Man” is “a rarity, and Azazel Jacobs is a genuinely singular filmmaker,” said Kino prexy Donald Krim. “The theme of young adults struggling to take their place in the world will certainly resonate with a larger audience.”

“Momma” reteams producers Alex Orlovsky, Hunter Gray and exec producer Paul Mezey, who collaborated on 2006’s “Half Nelson.” Azazel Jacobs’ “The GoodTimesKid” will be featured in a weeklong retrospective at Brooklyn’s BAM cinemas Aug. 10-15.

Deal was negotiated by Kino’s Donald Krim and Cinetic Media’s Sarah Lash.
