Chapin tops American Theater Wing

Board of directors names new chairman

Ted Chapin has been elected chairman of the board of directors of the American Theater Wing, the nonprofit legit service org that created the Tony Awards.

A prominent figure in the theater industry due to his role as president and executive director of the Rodgers & Hammerstein Organization, which manages rights to the composing duo’s musicals, Chapin has been an ATW board member since 1996, previously serving as secretary and VP. He also is a member of the Tony Administration Committee.

Chapin will take over the dual responsibilities of chairman Sondra Gilman and president Doug Leeds, both of whom are stepping down after completing their terms.

ATW also announced the appointment of four new board members: actress Kate Burton; James Higgins, chief administrative officer of New Vernon Capital Group; Omnicom Group exec VP Bruce Redditt; and Pfizer senior VP-chief communications officer Sally Susman. Current exec director Howard Sherman has been reupped through June 2011.

In addition to presenting the annual Tony Awards with the Broadway League, ATW is active in a number of theater-related education, scholarship and career development programs.
