Plot hews to Margaret Laurence's novel, which follows a rebellious woman who's at odds with her family and friends but trying to reconcile the choices she made as she looks back on her life and faces the prospect of entering a nursing home.
"Stone" opened in Canada in May to an $8,675 per screen average and is set for domestic release on July 11 in select markets including Gotham and Los Angeles; it will expand on July 25.
Pic is a production of Handmade Films Intl. and Alliance Films with the participation of Telefilm Canada, Buffalo Gal Pictures and Skogland Films Production.
Vivendi Entertainment, a division of Universal Music Group, launched 3½ years ago as a DVD company. In March, Vivendi Entertainment announced its arrival as a theatrical division and full-service film distribution company.
Shingle plans to distribute eight to 12 films annually with production budgets ranging from $5 million to $40 million and varying P&A commitments.
Vivendi will release the multihelmer anthology film "New York, I Love You" in the first quarter of 2009.
