Under the deal, Sonnenfeld will continue to develop scripted fare for the studio. Sony Pictures TV also secured a first-look arrangement with Sonnenfeld for digital and nonscripted series, and it is in first position for the helmer's directing services.
The deal will be extended should Sonnenfeld opt to direct a feature.
Sonnenfeld has been with Sony since last June, working on projects including the pilot "Hackett" at Fox. Before that, he was set up at Warner Bros. TV, where he directed the pilot for "Pushing Daisies." He continues to serve as an exec producer and director on the drama, which returns for a soph session this fall.
Sonnenfeld also is aboard to direct the HBO pilot "Suburban Shootout."
The producer-director has been prolific in TV of late, having also exec produced ABC's "Notes From the Underbelly."
Sonnenfeld was based at Sony (then Columbia TriStar TV) at the end of the 1990s, when he exec produced and helmed "The Tick," "Maximum Bob" and the "Fantasy Island" remake.
Helmer's directing credits include "RV," "Men in Black," "Get Shorty" and "The Addams Family."
