'Sit Down' staff given new ultimatum

Sony offers sweeter deal with IATSE contract

Sony Pictures TV has handed out a new ultimatum to writers on "Sit Down, Shut Up."

Studio has given scribes one more, slightly sweetened deal -- but still hasn't budged on its insistence that scribes work under an IATSE, rather than WGA, contract. Writers were given until Tuesday night to decide whether they'd continue with the show.

But the writers are remaining steadfast in their refusal to work under an IATSE contract. "Sit Down, Shut Up" is being produced for Fox; the rest of that net's animated series, which come from 20th Century Fox TV (a co-producer of "Sit Down"), are produced under WGA guidelines.

"I can't imagine they would really tank their own show over this and fail to deliver to Fox (and international buyers)," said one source, noting that Sony appeared to be playing "the hardest hardball."

Writers on the show stopped working earlier this month after learning that the show wouldn't be produced under WGA jurisdiction.

Writers and producers were apparently given assurances by some execs that a WGA deal was in the works -- but were eventually told that it wouldn't happen. Sony, meanwhile, claimed the scribes should have known that "Sit Down" would be IATSE-repped given the union's deal with Sony's Adelaide Prods.

Scribes had hoped that Sony would move the show to a new production company that was a WGA signatory; so far, the studio has refused to do so.
