Mirror Awards salute N.Y. journalists

Times' business section staff among winners

Ken Auletta, Joe Nocera and the entire Monday business section of the New York Times were among the winners Monday at the second Mirror Awards.

The kudos, sponsored by Syracuse U.'s Newhouse School, salute the media's best coverage of itself. This year's ceremony, held in the Rainbow Room atop 30 Rockefeller Center, was emceed by Andy Borowitz.

The satirist injected some edge into the fast-moving luncheon, lampooning Fox News and the New York Post before quipping about John McCain, "He's an American hero and I honor his service to the country. But what an asshole."

Nocera, a Times columnist, won for best commentary and Auletta for best single article, a New Yorker piece called "Promises, Promises" that, like many other Mirror finalists, examined the impact of Dow Jones being bought by News Corp.

In his acceptance speech, Nocera hailed former Dow Jones owners the Bancroft family, "without whose dysfunction much memorable journalism would not have been created."

The Times' media-focused Monday section won for overall excellence. Best investigative piece went to public TV's "Frontline" for two specials examining the TV news biz. Jeff Coplon won for best profile for his New York magazine piece on late Times managing editor Gerald Boyd.

In addition to the five competitive awards, CNN and YouTube were honored for their presidential debate teaming and Tim Russert got a lifetime achievement honor, an award that had been planned well before his June 13 death.
