Born in Boston, Mooney entered the music business after serving in the Army. He started out working for Bill Graham in San Francisco on the Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young tour. He then became a road manager and tour manager for acts including Bob Dylan, the Rolling Stones and Rod Stewart. One of his most visible roles was as road manager for Neil Diamond.
He also worked for Ticketmaster's Showcase operation, and was known for his expertise in arranging tours of South America and Europe.
After his retirement from the touring business, he worked in event production and worked for Habitat for Humanity in Louisiana.
He is survived by his wife Anne, a brother and his mother.
