The literary departments of Jean Doumanian Prods. and Barrow Street will keep in close contact regarding the creative properties they scout. Doumanian Prods. also has a first-look deal for projects developed by Barrow Street.
Barrow Street, an independent commercial producing org run by exec director Tom Wirtshafter and managing director Scott Morfee, is one of the rare companies that seems to have found a viable biz model for producing Off Broadway. Recent offerings include multiple-month runs of Nilaja Sun's "No Child...," Austin Pendleton's "Orson's Shadow" and "Bug," by "August" scribe Tracy Letts.
Relationship between Doumanian and Barrow Street initially formed due to the fact that both had produced Letts' work. (Barrow Street also produced Letts' 1998 Off Broadway hit "Killer Joe.")
"They know their audience, and they know who they're targeting," Doumanian said of Barrow Street. "Our tastes our similar. This is broadening our scope."
Most Barrow Street shows play the Barrow Street Theater, the 200-seat West Village venue operated by Wirtshafter and Morfee, although the producing team's latest offering, the award-winning tuner "Adding Machine," is currently running at Off Broadway's Minetta Lane.
"We have a theater, which is a terrific asset to throw into the mix," Morfee said. "This is two active producing offices deciding to stay in touch with each other on a more formalized basis, so we can both cover more ground."
