The EMI album will likely top the U.K. album charts when they are announced on Sunday.
The album has a long way to go to top the 465,000 units Coldplay’s last record “X&Y” sold in its first week in the U.K., and analysts are observing the EMI marketing campaign closely to see if the company’s new management can hit similar targets.
Coldplay will perform a free gig at Brixton Academy in London on Monday, but the band appears reticent to do additional promotional work. The band’s website states that the new album is “out of our hands now. It doesn’t belong to us any more,” while frontman Chris Martin reportedly walked out of a BBC radio interview to discuss “Viva.”
But with strong first day sales, “Viva” could become one of the bestselling albums this year. The album makes its debut in the U.S. next week.
