Hoops net ABC victory

Third game in finals wins night for network

The third game of the NBA Finals carried ABC to victory on Tuesday, ending a Fox winning streak on the night that dates back to early January.

Nielsen's affiliate-based preliminary results for the Los Angeles Lakers' triumph over the Boston Celtics were murky early Wednesday due to the game airing at different times in different parts of the country, but Tuesday's contest is expected to come in with a national average of roughly a 5.8 rating/17 share in adults 18-49 and 14 million viewers overall. This would continue the gradual growth for the series, which is shaping up to be the highest-rated NBA Finals since at least 2004.

Elsewhere on the night, Fox was the only net to put up much resistance, ranking first in the night's opening hour with "Moment of Truth" (2.4/8 in 18-49, 6.0 million viewers overall) and then placing a solid second to basketball from 9 to 10 p.m. (4.2/12 in 18-49, 8.8 million viewers overall). Both shows were down a bit vs. last week, when there was no hoops action on ABC.

CBS and NBC put up similar demo numbers on the night, and both were consistent throughout.

The Eye started with a repeat "NCIS" (1.9/6 in 18-49, 10.0 million viewers overall), which drew the largest overall audience in the 8 o'clock hour, and finished with a special firstrun "48 Hours Mystery" at 9 (1.9/5 in 18-49, 9.1 million viewers overall) and a repeat "Without a Trace" in its new timeslot (1.8/5 in 18-49, 8.3 million viewers overall).

At NBC, following an hour of "Most Outrageous Moments" (1.8/6 in 18-49, 6.0 million viewers overall), a special 9 p.m. repeat of "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" averaged a 1.7/5 in 18-49 and 6.2 million viewers overall, while the crime drama delivered a 1.8/5 in the demo and 6.0 million viewers overall for its regular 10 p.m. repeat.

Preliminary 18-49 averages for the night: ABC, 4.0/12; Fox, 3.3/10; CBS, 1.9/6; NBC, 1.8/5; Univision, 1.6/5; CW, 0.5/2.

In total viewers: ABC, 9.9 million; CBS, 9.1 million; Fox, 7.4 million; NBC, 6.1 million; Univision, 3.9 million; CW, 1.6 million.
