Turturro to direct 'Souls of Naples'

Actor set for movie adaptation of stage play

John Turturro will return to his Italian roots by directing "Souls of Naples," a movie adaptation of the Edoardo de Filippo play in which he starred Off Broadway.

Titled "Questi fantasmi" in the original, "Souls of Naples" is an Italian classic involving ghosts, cuckolds, scams and how to brew the perfect cup of espresso. Turturro will shoot in English in Naples next year.

Play is set in 1946 Naples, where penniless protag Pasquale and his young wife move into a haunted palazzo, rent free, as a scheming landlord seeks to give his estate an air of normality and lure some paying tenants.

Producer Domenico Procacci said Turturro is penning the screenplay for what he said is likely to be a mixed American and Italian cast.

The legit production of "Souls," was produced by Theater for a New Audience, played at Gotham's Duke Theater in 2005 and then traveled to Naples' Mercadante theater in 2006.

"Admittedly, we are doing something quite odd: having an American director filming an Italian classic in English in Italy," Procacci said. "But the show was very well received in Naples by the people who have this play in their DNA."
