Finland pays tribute to Pappa

Sound designer Paul Jyrala commemorated

STOCKHOLM -- The first Pappa Award, commemorating Finnish sound designer Paul "Pappa" Jyrala who died last July, will be handed out at an honorary concert in Helsinki on Friday.

The award will go to a young talent working in sound design in film and music.

Jyrala, 66, worked on dozens of Finnish films, for which he won five local Jussi film awards. He also worked on international hits including Roland Emmerich's "The Patriot" and Ridley Scott's "Hannibal."

He was the only Finnish industryite to be invited to be a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
