Match strikes 'Tulpan,' 'Bashir' deals

Sergei Dvortsevoi's 'Tulpan,' which took Un Certain Regard kudos, scored several sales at Cannes.

BERLIN — Cologne-based Match Factory saw business bustling at last week’s Cannes film mart, with major fest titles such as Un Certain Regard winner “Tulpan” and competition screener “Waltz with Bashir” ratcheting up a slew of sales.

Sergei Dvortsevoi’s “Tulpan,” a Kazakhstan-set tale of a lovelorn shepherd, went to the U.K.’s Newwave Films, France’s ARP, Karma in Spain, Lumiere in the Benelux, Turkey’s Ankara Film Assoc., Nachshon Films in Israel, Hong Kong’s First Distributors and Palace Film in Australia.

Andreas Dresen’s romantic drama “Cloud 9,” which picked up the Un Certain Regard’s Jury Coup de Coeur prize, sold to Atlanta in Portugal, Mongrel Media in Canada, ASC in France, Benelux distrib CNC, Filmcoopi in Switzerland, Greece’s Seven One and Spain’s Baditri.

Danish box office hit “Flame & Citron,” about two World War II resistance fighters, was nabbed by Australia’s Rialto, Spanish distrib Alta Film, Greece’s Ama, Alcine Terran in Japan and the U.K.’s Metrodome.

Directors’ Fortnight screener “Liverpool,” Lisandro Alonso's drama about a sailor who returns home after years at sea, went to the Netherlands’ Filmmuseum, Greece’s Artplex Attica and Poland’s Manana.

Company also inked deals for Norwegian filmmaker Bent Hamer's comedy-drama “O’Horten” with Longride in Japan, Australia’s Aztec, Italy’s Archibald Enterprise, CNC in the Benelux, Hungary’s Budapest Film and Poland’s Vivarto in addition to the previously announced acquisition by Sony Pictures Classic for North America.

Ari Folman’s animated “Waltz with Bashir,” which has sold to more than 40 territories, including the U.S. and Latin America (Sony Pictures Classics for both), also went to Sharmill Films in Australia and Future Film for Scandinavia.
