Zlin attracts varied lineup

Films aimed at younger audiences

LONDON — Top international features aimed at younger audiences will be in competition at the 48th edition of the Zlin Film Festival for Children and Youth that opens in the Czech Republic Sunday.

Czech director Zdenek Troiska’s “The Lovelies Riddle” and “SOS — Save our Seals” by Norway’s Arne Lindtner Naess are among eight competition features in the children’s section and “St Trinians” — the remake of the classic British girls’ school comedy directed by Oliver Parker and Barnaby Thomson — along with “No Network” by Iceland’s Ari Kristinsson are among another eight features competing in the youth section.

The festival — which also has a debuts competition that includes “Hush Your Mouth” by Britain’s Tom Tyrwhitt and “A Fly” by Russian director Vladimir Kott and a special competition for Central Europe’s “Visegrad” countries of Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia — will screen 571 films, 192 of them in competition during its week-long run.

With sidebars including Day of British Cinema featuring such classics as John Schlesinger’s “Billy Liar” and a focus on Japanese anime cartooning, this year’s Zlin festival — held in a Moravian town famous both for its Bata shoe factory and Frank Lloyd Wright architecture — has one of the richest programs ever, organizers said.

International guests expected during the week include “The Golden Compass” actress Dakota Blue Richards and “Grease” director Randal Kleiser.

The festival will screen films from 53 countries and its lineup includes 10 world, 34 international and 88 Czech Republic premieres.
