Under the pact, Nix will continue to exec produce "Burn Notice," which returns to USA Network for a second season this summer, and also develop projects for the shingle.
Nix has already sold a spec script to USA, an action comedy in the vein of "Burn Notice" -- but this time set in the world of law enforcement.
Script, which Nix originally wrote as a feature spec, centers on a cop who's relegated to the "small property crimes division." Cop makes the most of it, however, uncovering larger crimes through what initially appear to be minor infractions.
In locking up Nix's services, Fox TV Studios programming exec VP David Madden said the company learned its lesson after watching "The Shield" creator Shawn Ryan jump to bigger pastures.
"As a studio in our infancy, we were fortunate enough to produce a show like 'The Shield,' and then unfortunate enough to watch Shawn Ryan go away because we weren't well financed enough," Madden said. "We were determined not to repeat that. We're a bit more grown up now, and determined to keep Matt at the studio."
Nix first came to Madden's attention by way of Fuse Entertainment's Mikkel Bondesen, who also holds an overall deal at FTVS. (Bondesen also is Nix's manager and an EP on "Burn Notice.")
Nix had never done television, but Madden was floored by the idea for "Burn Notice." Along the way, USA picked up the project and even let Nix showrun it, despite his inexperience.
"Coming from so little background as Matt did, he did such a superlative job overseeing the pilot and as it went to series," Madden said.
Nix noted that he's only ever worked in TV at FTVS, and had no desire to explore other homes.
"If you've got a good thing and it's working, why not dance with the one that brung you," he said.
Nix's "Burn Notice" pilot won an Edgar Allan Poe Award for best TV episode teleplay.
