FX's Cherniss heads to Fox

Exec to serve as Reilly's top lieutenant

FX exec Matt Cherniss is expected to make the leap back to sister broadcast net Fox, where he'd serve as entertainment prexy Kevin Reilly's top lieutenant.

Deal isn't finalized, but could be announced as soon as Monday. Cherniss would fill the void left when former Fox exec VP Craig Erwich departed Fox last July. The exec VP job hasn't been filled since then.

Reilly and Fox Entertainment chairman Peter Liguori are both FX alums as well, and are said to be high on Cherniss, who currently serves as senior VP of original programming, FX drama and comedy series development.

At FX, Cherniss played a major role in the development of recent drama skeins "Damages," "The Riches" and "Dirt." He also had a hand in the development of "Nip/Tuck," "Rescue Me," "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" and "30 Days."

It would be a second tour of duty at Fox for Cherniss, who first joined the net in 1994 in the research department; he moved over to programming in 1998, handling shows such as "Melrose Place" and "Malcolm in the Middle."

Cherniss moved to FX as director of drama and comedy development in 2002.
