Microsoft still courting Yahoo

Tech giant in talks for alternate deal

Microsoft still wants to get in bed with Yahoo, but no longer wants to marry it.

The tech behemoth disclosed on Sunday that it is discussing an alternate deal with Yahoo that won’t involve a full takeover. Microsoft withdrew its $47.5 billion acquisition bid on May 3 and has repeatedly said it has moved on.

However, investors haven’t given up on a merger between the companies, which both need to boost their online ad biz. Last week, financier Carl Icahn submitted an alternate board of directors’ slate in hopes of bringing Microsoft back to the bargaining table.

But Microsoft made it clear that is not the goal – at least right now.

Microsoft said it is talking with Yahoo about an alliance that would help it improve and expand its online services and ad biz, but stressed that it is not proposing a new takeover bid at this time, key clause being “at this time.”

“Microsoft is not proposing to make a new bid to acquire all of Yahoo at this time, but reserves the right to reconsider that alternative," the company said in a carefully worded statement issued following a New York Post report that Microsoft topper Steve Ballmer would reconsider the acquisition under new Yahoo leadership.

Microsoft didn’t shed much like on the type of deal it is discussing with Yahoo, which could involve a joint venture. Yahoo, meanwhile, is said to be pressing ahead with a Google ad deal, first explored as a poison pill when the Microsoft bid was still on the table.
