Univision's revenue up 5.8%

Spanish media co. reports first quarter gains

Univision Communications saw net revenue increase by 5.8% in the first quarter to $458.8 million from $433.7 million a year earlier, with its TV and radio units delivering key growth, the leading Spanish-language media conglom announced.

The Univision network outperformed CBS to become the No. 4-ranking web in the country among adults 18-34, as measured by Nielsen's NTI.

Univision Radio's net revenue grew 2.9% in the first quarter of 2008, compared to an average decline of 4.8% in the markets it operates in. Unit ranked No. 1 among adults 25-54 in four major markets, including Los Angeles.

Meanwhile, Univision Online saw unique visits increase by 16% vs. the year-earlier quarter.

New ownership led by media mogul Haim Saban has been paring down the company's assets to focus on its core businesses. Univision’s music recording and publishing business as well as certain noncore assets were reported as discontinued operations and not included in the results. Universal Music Group bought Univision Music earlier this year.

Univision has a pending court case with its main programming supplier, Televisa of Mexico, which has been postponed several times. The new July 1 court date was granted to allow both parties to arrive at an out-of-court settlement.

Univision reported that Televisa litigation costs, payments under protest and other license fee overcharges amounted to $8.3 million in the first quarter compared to $6.5 million a year earlier. New restructuring costs amounted to $5.6 million.
