Fabio Barreto to direct 'Lula'
Film focuses on Brazilian president's early years

Rolling this summer, "Lula" will be produced by Paula Barreto for LC Barreto, the 45-year-old Brazilian filmmaking powerhouse.
"Lula" chronicles his family's immigration from Brazil's Northeast to Sao Paulo, Lula's years as a shoe-shine boy and his brother's arrest, which drove him into trade union activism, climaxing in Lula's heading Brazil's trade union movement and incarcelation, just as his mother dies.
"Beginning in poverty and immigration, Lula's life journey represents that of many Brazilians," said Fabio, who is co-writing the screenplay with Daniel Tendler, adapting the book "Son of Brazil."
"This is like a fairytale," added LC Barreto founder Luiz Carlos Barreto, the father of directors Fabio and Bruno Barreto.
LC Barreto is in talks with Joao Miguel, the lead in recent hit "Estomago," to play Lula, and with Gloria Pires ("Inheritance") to play Lula's mother.
"Lula" is co-produced by the Rio de Janeiro-based Intervideo Comunicacoes.
Parallel to "Lula," Bruno Barreto ("Bossa Nova") is prepping an adaptation of North American poet Elizabeth Bishop's relationship with Brazilian Lota De Macedo Soares, called "The Art of Losing."
