Dark drama about a family coming to terms with the death of a child from a rare genetic disease stars Catherine Deneuve, Jean-Paul Roussillon, Mathieu Amalric, Anne Consigny, Melvil Poupaud, Emmanuelle Devos and Chiara Mastroianni.
IFC initially eyed "Tale" footage at the Berlin fest and pounced on the finished product before Cannes officially began.
"We wanted to start the festival off with a bang," said Arianna Bocco, IFC Entertainment's veep of acquisitions. Bocco said a release date is undetermined.
"There has been a lot of talk about the doom and gloom hanging over this year's market. However, we are feeling particularly bullish about our business," said IFC Entertainment prexy Jonathan Sehring.Pascal Caucheteux and his company Why Not Prods. produced. Deal was negotiated by Bocco with Laurent Baudens of Wild Bunch on behalf of the producers.
IFC picked up back-to-back Cannes Palme d'Or winners, Cristian Mungiu's Romanian pic "4 Months, 3 Weeks, 2 Days" and Ken Loach's "The Wind That Shakes the Barley." At last year's Cannes, IFC grabbed a total of 10 films.
