'August' and 'Strange' top Circle honors

Acclaimed productions awarded by N.Y. Critics

"August: Osage County" and "Passing Strange" scored the headlining awards from the New York Drama Critics Circle, with "August" winning for top play and "Strange" nabbing musical.

No kudo for foreign play was given, nor were there any special citations.

Both "August" and "Strange" won in weighted ballot votes, after each failed to win a majority in round-the-table tallies.

It was the second big win of the day for "August." The family drama by Tracy Letts picked up three Outer Critics Circle Awards Monday morning, including one for top Broadway play. ("August" also took the Pulitzer last month.)

NYDCC members have the option of handing out a secondary award for foreign play (or for American play, in the event that the top play prize is taken by a foreign entry). Two now-shuttered shows, Tom Stoppard's "Rock 'n' Roll" and "The Seafarer" by Conor McPherson, both received strong support, but no consensus was reached despite a slim majority for "Rock."

Issue was complicated by the fact that another well-liked foreign play, "Black Watch" by Gregory Burke, was deferred for consideration until next season because many voters had not seen the show in its run last year at St. Anne's Warehouse in Brooklyn. The National Theater of Scotland production of "Watch" is set for a return engagement at St. Anne's this fall.

With 43 votes on its weighted ballot, "Strange" passed "Adding Machine" (37 votes), "Gone Missing," (nine), "Xanadu" (nine), and "A Catered Affair" and "Next to Normal" (eight each) to claim the title. (Among the season's Broadway contenders, "In the Heights" was ineligible because it was considered for its Off Broadway run last season.)

Special citations were discussed for Lincoln Center Theater's revival of "South Pacific," Patti Lupone's performance in "Gypsy" and composer-lyricist-thesp Lin-Manuel Miranda (for bringing new sounds to Broadway with "In the Heights"), but no majority was reached.

NYDCC is made up of Gotham legit critics, mostly for print outlets. Awards will be handed out May 19 at the Algonquin.
