Twentieth Century Fox will release sequel "Alvin and the Chipmunks II" on March 19, 2010. A followup had been expected, given the breakaway success of the first pic, which grossed $217.3 domestically and $141.1 million overseas for a worldwide haul of $358.4 million. But the film, which will be a co-production between Fox 2000 and New Regency, has no script yet. Furthermore, executives haven't settled on a concept for the sequel. The first film left off with the three singing chipmunks reuniting with their manager Dave Seville (Jason Lee).
At this time, Lee is not attached to reprise his role.
Fox also dated several other movies, including the bigscreen adaptation of vidgame "Street Fighter," which will bow Feb. 27.
Elsewhere, large-format exhib Imax Corp. said Monday it will release DreamWorks Animation's "Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa" day-and-date on Nov. 7. DreamWorks and Imax had previously announced that Imax would release DWA's four other toons through 2010.
And Universal has taken Emma Roberts starrer "Wild Child"' off its calendar. Pic was set for release on Aug. 22.
