"Voi siete la voce!" said Gore in Italian. "You are the voice!" he repeated, reverting to English. "With Current, you will find real freedom of information and opinion."
The packed press conference took place in Rome's Ara Pacis museum just as TV tycoon-turned pol Silvio Berlusconi began his third term as prime minister.
Gore also mentioned that he's mulling another movie on global warming, a follow-up to "An Inconvenient Truth."
Current TV will beam on Rupert Murdoch's Sky Italia paybox, which has 4.5 million subscribers, giving it a reach of 56 million households.
The Milan-based outpost will become the only Current channel with a daily live talkshow dedicated to current events, also integrating input from emails sent via its website.
Heading the channel, with around 30 staffers, is Tommaso Tessarolo, a former Mediaset consultant. Davide Scalenghe, a former MTV Intl. producer, will be in charge of production.
Founded in 2005 by Gore and entrepreneur Joel Hyatt, Current TV is based in San Francisco and airs in the U.S., U.K. and Ireland.
