India 2nd in cell phone subscriptions

Nation had 261 million users at end of March

India had 261 million mobile phone subscriptions at the end of March, making it the world's second-largest cellular market in numerical terms after China and ahead of the U.S.

The Telecoms Regulatory Authority of India reported that more than 10 million new subscribers were added in March compared with seven to eight million in previous months. Wireless connections outnumber the 39 million fixed-line phones in India by seven to one.

Broadband Internet connections grew by 430,000, or 12%, in March to hit 3.9 million at the end of the quarter.
