Lamtera to build 'Freej' theme park

Popular series to join cast of Dubailand

LONDON Lamtara Pictures, the shingle behind popular animated skein "Freej" have inked a deal with U.A.E.-based real estate company Tatweer to develop a four million sq. ft theme park based on the hit show.

The entertainment destination will be located in Dubailand, the 3 billion sq. ft. mega-project launched by Dubai Sheik Mohammed to turn the emirate into one of the world's premier tourist destinations.

"Freej" is the Middle East's first 3-D animated skein and airs exclusively on pan-Arab satcaster Dubai TV and terrestrial net Sama Dubai, both of which are part of Dubai Media Inc.

Skein follows the comic exploits of four local Emirati women. Lamtara are also working on turning the hit show into a feature project, although production on that is not set to begin before the end of 2009.

In the meantime, Lamtara chairman Mohammed Saeed Harib is hard at work getting the third series of "Freej" ready in time for September to coincide with the holy month of Ramadan, traditionally the busiest and most lucrative season for Arab TV execs.

"Tatweer's decision to bring the Freej characters to life marks an extraordinary recognition of local creativity," said Harib.

A string of U.S. studios, including Paramount, Universal, Marvel and Dreamworks Animation, have all inked deals in recent months to build their own theme parks in Dubailand.
