"Daniel X," which is set to hit shelves in July, will be the first book in a series for which Regency also acquired the rights. A graphic novel will follow in the fourth quarter.
Described as an action adventure, "Daniel X" chronicles the adventures of a conflicted yet extraordinary teen who yearns to discover secrets about himself and his family as he battles alien outlaws who threaten life on Earth.
Patterson, Steve Bowen and Leopoldo Gout are attached as exec producers.
Deal reflects Regency's mandate to produce big-event films with franchise potential for all audiences. The company most recently co-financed with 20th Century Fox the sci-fi teen adventure "Jumper," which was based on a bestselling Steven Gould novel.
Patterson, who is best known for his Hollywood-adapted adult thrillers "Along Came a Spider" and "Kiss the Girls," is also a bestselling author of young-adult fiction. His "Maximum Ride" debuted at No. 1 on the New York Times children's series bestseller list and remained at the top for 33 weeks.
A smallscreen adaptation of his "Women's Murder Club" airs on ABC. Patterson's books have sold more than 130 million copies worldwide.
