Damon Wayans feels 'Better' at ABC

Comedy pilot follows a recovering alcoholic

Damon Wayans is back in the ABC family.

Comic has cut a rich deal to star in the ABC Studios comedy pilot "Never Better" for its Alphabet sibling. Wayans will also exec produce along with scribe Dave Walpert, Warren Littlefield and veteran Brit producer John Heyman.

Marc Buckland ("My Name is Earl," "Scrubs") is on board to direct.

"Never Better" revolves around a recovering alcoholic who's determined to be a good husband and father despite his many missteps. Project is based on a Brit property that recently made its debut on BBC2. Heyman's reps at ICM and Littlefield got a hold of the original script by scribe Sintan Ryan and had the U.S. adaptation set up for development at ABC Studios before the BBC2 series was produced.

Single-camera vehicle had been given a cast-contingency order from ABC, but Wayans' commitment makes it a go pilot for the network.

Wayans was a fixture on ABC from 2001-05 with his domestic comedy "My Wife and Kids," also produced through ABC Studios.
