'Spider' snares Broadway debut

Little-known version of play set for next fall

Producer Darren Bagert will bring the little-known 1983 play adaptation of "Kiss of the Spider Woman" to Broadway next season.

Production aims to begin perfs in the late fall. Peter DuBois ("Becky Shaw") will likely direct the show, capitalized at around $2.2 million.

Casting for the two-hander is still under way.

Story of two cellmates in a Buenos Aires prison is well known to legit auds from the Tony-winning 1993 tuner by Kander and Ebb. Title also has a high profile thanks to the 1985 pic that starred Raul Julia and William Hurt (who won an Oscar for his perf).

Late Argentinean scribe Manuel Puig adapted the play from his own 1976 novel. A London production, translated by Allan Baker, played the Bush Theater in 1985, and the Donmar staged a revival last year.

Rialto incarnation, which also will use the Baker translation, marks the New York premiere of the straight-play adaptation. Bagert, a member of the producing teams of recent revivals of "Company" and "Sweeney Todd," among other productions, aims to have the show treated as a new play.

Planning on a run of six months or longer, the producer hopes to snare big-name talent for the project. "It's definitely a star vehicle," he said.

With the show currently being cast by James Calleri, dates and theater have not yet been nailed down.
