"Citizen Havel" scored the Kingfisher in the docu section, a bittersweet victory for co-helmer Miroslav Janek, who completed the film begun by the late Pavel Koutecky. Helmer died in an accident after over a decade of shooting behind-the-scenes events of ex-Czech president Vaclav Havel's two terms in office.
The jury seemingly commended Havel himself, a dissident playwright imprisoned by the pre-1989 regime for five years before becoming the first elected president of his country in nearly 40 years.
The often light-hearted pic reveals the "Don Quixote efforts of the filmmakers and the main protagonist to change the world for the better," jurors said in a statement.
Aud award went to Tomas Berina's "Grapes," a summer road comedy set in the wine country of Moravia, an eastern Czech province.
Thesp Ivan Trojan won the perf award for his portrayal of a mildly mentally disabled mischief maker in Jiri Vejdelek's "Vaclav," while Peter Dubecky was honored for promoting Czech film abroad for his work leading the Slovak Film Institute.
