The section will include world premieres of Martin Radich’s debut feature “Crack Willow,” a Brit pic described as a “highly original interpretation of the psychological effects of social decay,” and Robert Beaucage’s horror-romance “Spike” from the U.S.
Also selected are “Bigga Than Ben: A Russians’ Guide to Ripping Off London,” a comedy directed by Suzie Halewood, and American director Alex Orr’s “Blood Car,” a satire about a teacher who invents a car that runs on human blood.
Another U.S. helmer, Rona Mark, will bring “Strange Girls” to Edinburgh for its international premiere. Pic is the story of twin sisters who share a passion for porn.
From Argentina comes Luciano Podcaminsky’s “The Third Pint,” an experimental travelogue about a man who becomes invisible after drinking three pints.
“The term ‘cult cinema’ has become mere marketing-speak in recent years,” said Edinburgh artistic director Hannah McGill. “With this new section, we want to reanimate the spirit of the truly cult-worthy midnight movie by showing films that take real risks with their ideas, their aesthetic choices and their humor.”
The fest, which takes place June 18-29, hopes to reinvent itself as a “festival of discovery” akin to Sundance
