“The Edge of Heaven,” a Turkish-German production about two deaths that bring strangers together, also picked up a Lola for editing.
Nina Hoss, who nabbed a Silver Bear for actress at the Berlinale last year, won again for her role as a businesswoman grappling with inner demons in Christian Petzold’s haunting drama “Yella.”
Elmar Wepper took best actor for his role as a grieving widower in Doris Doerrie’s “Cherry Blossoms.”
Christine Schorn won supporting actress for her role in Franziska Meletzky’s comedy-drama “Frei nach Plan,” while Frederick Lau took supporting actor for “The Wave.”
Bettina Bluemner’s “Pool of Princesses,” a portrait of three teenage girls living in Berlin’s multicultural Kreuzberg district, took best doc Lola. Armin Voelckers’ “Leroy,” about an Afro-German teen who falls in love with girl from a right-wing extremist family, picked up the children and youth film Lola.
Some 1,500 guests attended the glitzy event, held at Berlin’s Palais am Funkturm. Presented by Germany’s federal culture ministry, the Lolas are handed out in 15 categories and carry $4.4 million in prizes.
The winners are chosen by the German Film Academy’s more than 1,000 members.
Among the evening’s high-profile guests was local star Til Schweiger, who appeared amiable following a spat with the German Film Academy after his box office hit “Rabbit Without Ears” was overlooked for the Lolas due to technical reasons. The fracas has inspired Schweiger to set up his own people’s choice award that aims to include moviegoers and showcase more mainstream movies.
Other attendees included producer Bernd Eichinger, director Tom Tykwer and federal culture minister Bernd Neumann.
