Molly Dineen's 'Land' is Reel winner

British doc wins Grand Prix at Swiss festival

British helmer Molly Dineen won the 20,000 Swiss franc ($19,600) Grand Prix at this year's Visions du Reel festival here for her 2007 docu "The Lie of the Land," about the decline of Britain's farming community.

Doc was among 160 shown at the Swiss fest, which closed on Wednesday.

The seven-day event had a political edge this year: human rights, press freedom and sustainable development were all investigated.

"The political side is not a choice on our part but a reflection of what is on the market," fest director Jean Perret said.

French-Russian helmer Denis Sneguirev won the $9,800 audience award for "Entre ours et loup" (Between the Bear and the Wolf). It follows the 2006 trial of human rights activist Stanislav Dmitrievsky.

Now in its 14th year, Visions du Reel continues to grow. Fest saw ticket sales rise by 20% this year and drew 28,000 visitors, while attendance at the Doc Outlook international market was up by 50% to 700, organizers said.
