ESPN Classic to bow in South Africa

Sport network to debut on May 1

South African-based continental paybox MultiChoice will launch ESPN Classic on its DStv bouquet of channels May 1.

The 24-hour channel, which showcases great sporting moments from global archives, will complement the ESPN live sports channel that has been available on DStv since June 1994.

Lynne Frank, managing director of ESPN, Europe, Middle East and Africa, said ESPN Classic in Africa would focus on soccer, rugby and cricket, all very popular sports on the continent. South Africa's triumphs and defeats would feature strongly in the line-up.

"Twelve months ago we launched a localized version of our flagship sports news program, SportsCenter and we acquired cricinfo.com and scrum.com last year to reach cricket and rugby fans," she said.
