Thesp Alan Rickman will continue his directing career helming David Greig’s new adaptation of August Strindberg’s “Creditors” (Sept. 25-Nov. 15). Fellow actor Ian McDiarmid (“Star Wars”) will star in his own adaptation of Andrew O’Hagan’s novel “Be Near Me” (Jan. 22, 2009-March 14, 2009) in a co-production with the National Theater of Scotland. Show is helmed by John Tiffany, whose hit “Black Watch” is on a world tour and will return to Gotham this fall.
Argentine performer Elena Roger, who shot to fame in the title role in Grandage’s London staging of “Evita” and then took over in a non-singing role in “Boeing-Boeing,” will headline a revival of Pam Gems’ bio-drama “Piaf” (Aug. 8-Sept. 20). The revival is helmed by rising star Jamie Lloyd, just appointed one of the theater’s associate directors, in his Donmar debut.
In another venue debut, Jeremy Herrin -- fresh from his well-regarded Royal Court production of “The Vertical Hour” -- will direct a rare revival of T.S. Eliot’s verse play “The Family Reunion” (Nov. 20-Jan. 10, 2009). This staging forms the centerpiece of a Donmar festival of the poet’s work that includes six performances by Stephen Dillane of “The Waste Land” helmed by Britain’s favorite auteur director, Katie Mitchell.
The season will run alongside the Donmar’s previously announced yearlong West End season of plays by Chekhov, Yukio Mishima and Shakespeare starring Kenneth Branagh, Judi Dench, Derek Jacobi and Jude Law.
At the same time, Grandage’s production of Peter Morgan’s “Frost/Nixon” will kick off a U.S. tour on Sept. 25 with Alan Cox and Stacy Keach in the respective title roles. Show will visit cities including L.A., Dallas, Cleveland and Washington, D.C.
