“Spamalot” will have played 519 perfs since its 2007 opening -- a good run by Broadway-in-the-desert standards.
But the Wynn’s replacement for “Spamalot,” a standard Vegas outing from celeb impersonator Danny Gans, seems another mark of the perceived untenability of most Rialto offerings in Sin City.
In 2006 a Vegas incarnation of “Hairspray” shuttered after only a few months, and at the Wynn, a 2005 staging of “Avenue Q” didn’t last a year.
Even relative warhorse “Mamma Mia!” is skedded to close at the Mandalay Bay in early 2009, after a run of nearly six years.
Legiters generally consider Vegas a tough market, not only because of major competish from gambling and shopping attractions but also due to the difficulty of cultivating consumer awareness during a typical tourist’s brief visit.
