'Rosso' tops Palm Beach Festival

Italian drama wins best film, director

International films ruled at the 13th annual Palm Beach Film Festival.

Christano Bartone's Italian drama "Rosso come ll cielo" (Red Like the Sky), based on the true story of a blind sound editor, won best film and director at the Florida fest. The jury cited Bartone's "emotional and cinematically powerful direction" in their decision.

Jury also lauded noted choreographer Lachen Zinoun's directorial debut from Morocco, "Oud al ward" (The Lost Beauty), with the special jury prize.

Audience awards went to Lynn Roth's Palestinian drama "The Little Traitor" and "Of All Things," Jody Lambert's doc on the comeback tour of songwriter Dennis Lambert.

Doc nod went to "D'une seule voix" (With One Voice), Xavier de Lauzanne's chronicle of a tour involving Israeli and Palestinian musicians and the drama backstage.

Other kudos went to the ensemble cast of "Kings," about Irish emigrants in England; Indian filmmaker Shalini Kantayya's "A Drop of Life" drew the short film nod.
