Two-year, seven-figure pact calls for Weiner to create and exec produce original projects for the Disney studio, which is already home to femme-friendly fare such as "Desperate Housewives" and "Grey's Anatomy." It doesn't include rights to Weiner's existing properties.
In part, that's because much of Weiner's body of work has already been snapped up by other studios. Universal is developing her novel "Little Earthquakes" as a feature, while DreamWorks is adapting her short story collection "The Guy Not Taken."
Weiner's "In Her Shoes" was made into a Cameron Diaz starrer by Fox in 2005. Author has published six books.
ABC Studios prexy Mark Pedowitz noted that Weiner already has "legions of fans" that are likely to want to check out a series created by her.
"They respond to her wry wit, embrace her smart characters and want to live in the worlds she creates," Pedowitz said. For her part, Weiner said she was looking forward to "having a new canvas for my storytelling."
Weiner's most recent work is "Certain Girls," a sequel to "Bed." It was released April 8.
