The Golden Apple multiplex and shopping center, recently opened in the center of Zlin, a Moravian town also famous for its Bata shoe factory and Frank Lloyd Wright-designed modernist housing, will screen an expanded program of 400 films over eight days.
More than 60,000 visitors are expected to the festival, which this year is launching a range of new programs including one aimed at university students who are an increasingly significant audience, festival organizers said in a statement Tuesday (April 15).
New sections include Night Horizons – late night screenings of films that deal with controversial issues such as racially-mixed marriages and homosexuality – and a section on the best of British cinema.
A retrospective of the best African films from the past 20 years, ‘African Childhood’ and a showcase of Israeli cinematography are also new additions to a festival that has traditionally had more of a European and American focus.
The Zlin International Film Festival for Children and Youth runs June 1-8.
