Dark Horse's "Buffy" also scored a mention in the continuing series field, which includes Dynamite's "The Boys," Viz's "Naoki Urasawa's Monster," Vertigo/DC's "Y: The Last Man" and DC's "The Spirit."
"Buffy" also scored noms in writing for Brian K. Vaughan and Joss Whedon and coloring for Dave Stewart.
"Johnny Hiro" was another Eisner favorite, nabbing four nominations for best new series, humor writing, humor publication and best single issue.
Other major Eisners categories include best limited series, publications for teens, kiddie comics, best comic strip collections and online entries such as best digital comic.
The Eisners' judging panel is comprised of John Davis, director of pop culture markets at Bookazine; prolific sci-fi writer Paul Di Filippo, Atom! Freeman, co-owner of Brave New World Comics; Entertainment Weekly senior writer Jeff Jensen; and Eva Volin, supervising children's librarian for the Alameda Free Library.
This year's crop of Hall of Fame nominees include industry icon Matt Baker ("Phantom Lady"), DC Comics' John Broome ("Green Lantern"), Marvel's George Tuska ("Iron Man," "Captain Marvel"), horror master Graham Ingels ("Tales from the Crypt," "The Vault of Horror") and EC Comics' Reed Crandall ("Blackhawk").
Of the 15 nominated, four will be chosen for the Hall of Fame honors. Voting in this category will be done online only at www.eisnervote.com. To vote, you must be a professional who works in the comics business. The voting deadline is April 18.
Two comic book legends -- "The Yellow Kid" creator R. F. Outcault and DC Comics' founder Major Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson -- will be inducted into the Hall of Fame sans the voting process.
All winners will be announced July 25 at Comic-Con Intl. in San Diego. For the full list of nominees, visit Variety's Bags and Boards blog.
