Man attempts to torch SABC's HQ

Arsonist had 'quarrel' with broadcaster

JOHANNESBURG -- A man with "a quarrel" with South African Broadcasting Corp. management tried to torch the pubcaster's main building in Auckland Park, Johannesburg, on April 7.

Police captain William Mpondo said the man, 24, had somehow bypassed security entry restrictions to gain access to the main building of the SABC complex despite carrying a can of gasoline. Security staff then saw the man pouring the gasoline on the floor and trying to light it. He said the man was subdued before he could start the fire and arrested.

When interviewed, the man said he "had a quarrel with some of the management of SABC because of a project that went wrong," according to police.
