| Amos Gitai's 'One Day You'll Understand' unspooled in Berlin. |
Gitai is a veteran attendee of the Swiss lakeside event, where several of his politically charged pics have unspooled, most notably The Murder, about the assassination of Yitzhak Rabin, in 1996. He also served on the main Locarno jury in 1992.
Locarno artistic topper Frederic Maire praised Gitai, describing him as above all a civic-minded free spirit for whom film is first of all the expression of a critical look at the world.
His most recent film, One Day Youll Understand, starring Jeanne Moreau, unspooled earlier this year in Berlin.
Previous Golden Leopard recipients include Jean-Luc Godard, Bernardo Bertolucci and Manoel de Oliveira.
The Locarno fest will run Aug. 6-16.
