BANGKOK -- The Thai movie industry scored another hit at the local box office with a powerful start this week for "Art of the Devil 3."
Distributed by Five Star Entertainment, the bloody supernatural thriller scored some $1.3 million on its four-day opening weekend to Sunday, putting it well ahead of second-place film, another local title "Dream Team."
"The film did strongly on the opening Thursday and performed well over the four-day weekend," said Five Star exec Apiradee "Amy" Eiamphungporn. "The film has also been sold to 40 countries which were our customers for 'Art of the Devil' 1 and 2."
After a slow start to the year, local films are now on a roll. Two weeks ago teen romantic comedy "Hormones" made a $1.5 million bow and has accumulated $2.2 million.
In February, "Chocolate," a Thai female actioner from the Sahamongkol stable previously responsible for "Ong bak," kicked and fought its way to $2.05 million.
Biggest Hollywood movies to date are "Jumper," which bounced along to $2.1 million, and "10,000 BC," which opened with a primeval $1.8 million first weekend, but slumped in subsequent frames and has now cumed $2.05 million.
Neither of the Hollywood films with Thai connections has performed outstandingly. "Shutter," a remake of a hit Thai horror movie, claimed $350,000 after two weeks, and "Rambo," which lensed in Thailand and is partially set in the country, claimed 390,000 in three weeks.
