The male R&B quintet formed in the fourth season of the MTV show topped the nation's album sales chart by selling 190,000 copies of their self-titled Bad Boy/Universal debut, according to Nielsen SoundScan data.
It has been nearly seven years since a debut album by a male group has topped the chart, the last being D12's "Devil's Night." Panic At The Disco's second album "Pretty. Odd." (Fueled by Ramen/Atlantic), sold 139,000 to open at No. 2, a career best in position and sales.
Third place went to Counting Crows whose first studio album in six years, "Saturday Nights & Sunday Mornings" (Geffen), sold 106,000 copies.
Danity Kane's "Welcome to the Dollhouse" sold 89,000 copies and slipped to No. 4. The rush-released sophomore album from the Raconteurs, "Consolers of the Lonely" (Third Man/Warner Bros) sold 42,000 copies to start at No. 7.
Album's release date was announced only a week before the disc hit stores. "Funplex" (Astralwerks), the return from the B-52's after a 15-year absence, sold 30,000 copies to start at No. 11.
Other debuts include Enrique Iglesias' "95/08 Exitos" (Universal Latino) selling 22,000 (No. 18), "WWE: The Music Volume 8" (Sony) pinning 17,000 ( No. 24) and Simon & Garfunkel's "Live 1969" (Columbia/Legacy), which sold 16,000 copies at Starbucks outlets (No. 33).
In the singles department, Mariah Carey and Madonna passed Elvis Presley in one stanza.
Carey's "Touch My Body" became her 18th No. 1 single, moving her past the King to second place on the all-time singles tally, two behind the Beatles. The track sold 286,000 downloads, which set a record for the most downloads moved in a week. Madonna pushed aside Elvis' mark of most top 10 singles. Her "4 Minutes," sold 217,000 copies to hit No. 3, making it her 37th top 10 single.
