Kadokawa to expand theater chain

Company to add three local films to line-up

TOKYO -- Distrib Kadokawa Pictures plans to expand its theater chain to some 200 screens from its current 106 screens plus three Tokyo Arthouses.

Speaking at Friday's press conference to unveil its 2008-2009 slate Kadokawa prexy Taiichi Inoue said the distrib was shooting for a box office of 5 billion yen ($50 million) this year.

"We plan to soon double that to 10 billion yen ($100 million) and become one of the four top Japanese distributors," Inoue added. 

Among Japanese pics are the teen drama "Dive!!," skedded for a June 14 bow; period actioner "Jirocho Sangokushi," set for a September bow; and the animal yarn "The Kayama Zoo Story."

The company also plans to add three more local pics to the line-up this year.

Looking ahead to 2009, Kadokawa will bow the fourth installment in its "Geroro" toon series for kiddies.

Among foreign pics are the Korean horror "The Black House," which opens on April 5;  the Korean drama "May 18," which bows on May 10; the Chinese basketball pic "Kung Fu Dunk," skedded for a summer bow; the Jodie Foster starrer "Nim's Island," set for a September release; and the Vincente Penarrocha drama "Arritmia," which is penciled in for fall.

Also on the 2008 lineup is "One Missed Call," the Eric Valette remake of the 2004 Kadokawa horror hit.
