Film critic and theorist Reynaud enjoys screening films for audiences as much as she enjoys writing about the art behind them. She has an outlet for that interest at Redcat, an exhibition space created for, but not exclusive to, students of CalArts.
In addition to teaching several classes at the renowned institution, Reynaud has co-curated Redcat’s avant-garde film series with CalArts dean Steve Anker since the space opened in 2003.
The two cineastes have brought their considerable knowledge (and separate tastes) to the series, indulging audiences with screenings and discussions of rare films, frequently bringing the pics’ far-flung directors to Los Angeles. This season features work from German filmmaker Heinz Emigholz and visual artist Carolee Schneemann.
Reynaud considers the series an extension of the school’s unconventional curriculum. “If people want to enter the mainstream, there are other film schools they can go to. You have to train the next generation of cinephiles to look at the movies you believe in,” Reynaud says.
