Beeb goes back to 'Family'

Generation gap sitcom reordered

LONDON -- U.S. scribe-producer Fred Barrons’ generation gap sitcom “My Family” has been reupped by the BBC for another two seasons plus a Christmas special.

Made by DLT Entertainment U.K. in association with Rude Boy Prods., it stars Robert Lindsay and Zoe Wanamaker as long-suffering parents Ben and Susan Harper and is based on Barrons’ own family.

In all, 20 new episodes will be made of the skein, which bowed on the pubcaster’s flagship web, BBC1, in 2000 and is produced by John Bartlett.

Said Don Taffner Jr., prexy of DLT Entertainment and the show’s executive producer: “For the BBC to commission so many episodes is proof of their on-going commitment to this consistently top-rated comedy.”

Despite winning audiences of more than seven million, a high rating for a British sitcom in the multi-channel era, “My Family” has always remained deeply unfashionable.

This is probably because of its traditional qualities and suburban middle-class setting - and the fact that TV critics in the U.K. prefer their sitcoms on the edgy side.

Unusually for a British sitcom, it is written by a team of U.S. and U.K. writers, which may explain why it has sold to many international markets including Australia and Germany.

Across the Atlantic “My Family” airs on BBC America.
