Music director and conductor Gemignani gets the award for distinguished achievement in musical theater. Gemignani has music-directed a long list of Stephen Sondheim tuners including “Follies,” “A Little Night Music,” “Sweeney Todd,” “Into the Woods” and “Assassins.”
Helmer Sher receives the Julia Hansen award for directing excellence. Sher, the a.d. of Seattle’s Intiman Theater, has become a regular player in Gotham with recent production such as “The Light in the Piazza,” “Awake and Sing!” and the current revival of “South Pacific.”
Stewart is the founder and director of seminal downtown theater La Mama E.T.C. She’ll take the honor for unique contribution to the theater.
At the luncheon ceremony, set for May 16, kudos also will be handed out for play, musical and revivals of a play and a musical. Season’s nominees will be announced April 22.
Annual Drama League event will be hosted by Harvey Fierstein, with Laura Linney, Laurence Fishburne and Patrick Stewart among the thesps serving as honorary co-chairs of the event.
