Santaolalla given BMI Icon honor

Composer won Oscars for 'Brokeback,' 'Babel'

Gustavo Santaolalla, who won back-to-back Oscars for his scores to "Brokeback Mountain" and "Babel," will receive the BMI Icon award at BMI's 15th annual Latin Awards on June 12.

A native of Argentina, Santaolalla was a pioneer of Spanish-language rock 'n' roll in the 1970s, a key producer of rock en Espanol acts over the last two decades and a label owner. He also has been a chronicler of the traditions of the tango and moved the music forward through his band Bajafondo Tango Club.

An all-star musical tribute will pay homage to Santaolalla's achievements. Award has previously gone to Los Tigres del Norte, Juan Luis Guerra and Carlos Santana.

In addition to the Icon tribute, the ceremony will recognize the Latin song, songwriter and publisher of the year.
